Indigo dyeing was introduced to Japan from China via Korea during the Nara period, and by the Heian period, it became a color cherished by the aristocracy. In the Edo period, it spread to the common people and was widely used for kimono, noren (curtains), and various household items. Its deep and beautiful blue was referred to as “Japan Blue” by a British scientist who visited Japan during the Meiji period, and its charm spread overseas.

This product is a tray made by molding indigo-dyed antique fabric with synthetic resin, designed to incorporate traditional Japanese indigo dyeing into modern daily life.

The indigo-dyed antique fabrics used in this product were carefully collected from all over Japan, including those that were once cherished and used or stored in warehouses for long periods. Many of the fabrics were dyed between the Meiji and early Showa periods, each with unique colors and patterns, making every piece one of a kind.

The collected fabrics are carefully cut to ensure that the most suitable patterns for the tray size are selected before being sent to the molding factory in Wakayama.

The cut fabric is carefully processed at a factory in Wakayama, known for its excellent molding techniques. Using a press machine capable of handling up to 100 tons, synthetic resin is layered over the fabric, and the molding process is carried out slowly with heat and pressure.

Since the thickness and texture of the fabric vary from piece to piece, each item is manufactured with precise adjustments to temperature and time. Even indigo-dyed antique fabrics that have faded with use regain their rich, deep blue, almost as if freshly dyed, through the pressing process.

After molding, any excess fabric extending beyond the tray is carefully trimmed, and the edges are polished to achieve a smooth finish.

Each tray has a unique character, making it truly special. It is a timeless product that blends traditional materials with modern craftsmanship, bringing lasting beauty to everyday life.

This indigo-dyed antique fabric tray is the perfect size for various uses—not only for serving at the dining table, but also for holding small items as part of your interior decor. The surface is carefully coated with synthetic resin, giving it a subtle sheen and making it resistant to water and stains. Upon closer inspection, the weave of the fabric and the worn texture from age remain visible, allowing you to enjoy the unique charm of antique cloth.

One of the unique charms of this product is how the color gradually softens with continued use. You can enjoy the natural aging process, just as you would with real fabric.

We hope you will enjoy using this indigo-dyed antique fabric tray in your daily life, while imagining the streets of Japan over a century ago, once beautifully dyed in shades of indigo.
