小田原・薗部産業がつくる、日本の木の道具

日本には、古くから木とともに暮らしてきた文化があります。

器やお椀、家具、建具など、日々の生活の中で使われるものには、その土地で育った木が使われ、木の種類や木目、手触りを感じながら暮らしてきました。

Talkで開催している「THE WOOD OF JAPAN」では、そんな日本の木と、それを扱うつくり手にあらためて目を向けています。

今回ご紹介するのは、神奈川県小田原市に工場を構える薗部産業。

木の産地として知られる小田原周辺の環境と、長年培われてきた木工の技術を背景に、木の器を中心としたものづくりを続けています。

薗部産業のものづくりで印象的なのは、木そのものの個性を活かしていること。

木目や色、節など、一つひとつ異なる表情を持つ木を、必要以上に飾り立てるのではなく、素材の魅力がそのまま感じられるように仕上げています。

手に取ったときの軽さや、木肌のやわらかさ。

使い込むことで少しずつ変化していく色や艶。

木の道具は、完成した瞬間がゴールではなく、使う人の暮らしの中で時間を重ねることで、少しずつ育っていくものなのだと思います。

今回の「THE WOOD OF JAPAN」では、そんな日本の木の魅力と、それを暮らしの道具へと変えていくつくり手の仕事を、実際に手に取りながら感じていただけます。

遠くの産地から運ばれてきた素材ではなく、私たちが暮らすこの日本で育った木。

その木が、職人の手を通り、ひとつの道具になり、そしてまた誰かの日常の中で使われていく。

Sonobe Sangyo — Woodworking from Odawara

Japan has a long tradition of living with wood.

From bowls and furniture to everyday household tools, wood has always been an important part of Japanese life. Each type of wood carries its own character, from its grain and color to its texture and scent.

At Talk, our “THE WOOD OF JAPAN” exhibition explores the beauty of Japanese wood and the people who work with it.

This time, we introduce Sonobe Sangyo, a long-established woodworking company based in Odawara, Kanagawa.

Sonobe Sangyo creates wooden tableware and everyday objects while making the most of the natural character of each piece of wood. Rather than hiding its imperfections, their work allows the beauty of the material itself to remain visible.

Wooden objects also change with time. Their color, texture, and subtle shine gradually develop through everyday use, becoming something unique to each owner.

Through “THE WOOD OF JAPAN,” we hope to share not only the beauty of Japanese wood, but also the craftsmanship and stories behind the objects made from it.
